When I import a PNG image into Inkscape, it opens a new document. It started doing this a while ago. Before, I could import the image into the document that was already open. Now, every file I import creates a new document. How can I reverse this?

Describe if Inkscape was newly installed, or upgraded from an earlier version.
Describe the version of Inkscape and the installer you used (the file you downloaded from the web: .msi/.exe/.zip/appimage/other, PPA/Snap/Flatpak, dmg/other ).
Describe any special hardware being used, like tablet/stylus, external drives or multiple monitors.
Describe any helper/assistive programs or keyboard modifiers (macros, languages, etc.).
Describe if your OS has been updated or if other programs have been installed just prior to the issue becoming apparent.

I am experiencing the same problem/change.
OS version: Windows 10.
Inkscape version: Inkscape 1.4 (86a8ad7, 2024-10-11).
There is a setting "SVG import mode" which can be set to "New". It is only supposed to affect svg import not PNG, but seems like 1.4.2 has a bug. https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/issues/5642
As a temporary workaround open preferences and make sure "SVG import mode" is set to not "New". My current settings are:
Checked the history and the last fix has been backported to 1.4 branch. Should be fixed in next bugfix release 1.4.3 .
