Let's say I want do draw two rectangles, aligned at the top, the second, say, 20 mm to the right of the first.
I can draw the first with the rectangle tool, and then the second, somewhere to the right, and align them. Can someone tell me how to do that in such a way that the gap between them is 20mm (apart from computing the top-left corner of the second and watching its position on the bars while dragging ...)

There are H and V spacing tools in the Align and Distribute dialog.

After spacingย two (by any method), additional objects can be drag-spaced to match.

Another method is to draw the second rectangle right at the edge of the first (using snapping), then suffixย  "+20" to the X-position value* in the controls bar at the top of the screen.
